NCRUCLAA: RTU d. PMMS, 64-57

NCRUCLAA on Facebook    MANILA – Small ball Rizal Technological University continued their amazing run by ousting Philippine Merchant Marine School from the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) playoffs, 64-57, at the San Andres Sports Complex Monday (March 13).  The Blue Thunder overcame their lethargic start to join earlier qualifier De Ocampo Memorial College in the semifinal round.

PMMS raced to a 21-11 lead with Domark Matillano knocking in 11 markers.  However, RTU responded by opening the second period with a 12-0 run to make the game interesting and shift control to their side.

Firing at will from all angles, Nicole Liquinan capped his shooting display by nailing a triple followed by a basket from Cyrus Tabi to give RTU and unassailable 64-51 advantage with 2:55 remaining.  Elvin Chan would hit one more basket before exiting the game for good with a knee injury and PMMS would add to more but it hardly mattered.

Liquinan led the Blue Thunder with 19 points.  Kerr Bangeles was next with 17 as he combined again with Jonathan Boholano in manning the center position for majority of the contest.

After his first period explosion, Matillano was checked by the defense but still managed to pace the Mariners with 22 points.  No other teammate scored in twin digits with Chan chipping in nine.
