RTU, PMMS Clash For Volley Crowns

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – It will be a dual meet between Rizal Technological University and Philippine Merchant Marine School for the Women’s and Men’s Division championships of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Volleyball tournament after both schools hurdled their semifinal opponents Monday (March 6) at the RTU Gym.  RTU is the defending champion in both divisions and will aim for no less for another double conquest this coming Wednesday (March 8) at the same venue starting at 8:00 AM.

The Lady Thunder began the day’s hostilities with a three-set elimination of rookie squad Colegio de San Lorenzo, 25-13, 25-18 and 25-21.  Coach Edgar Barroga displayed this team’s deep talent pool by allowing his second unit to play majority of and finish the deciding third set and totally not fielding reigning league Most Valuable Player Zairyrill Sky Chavez who suited up despite not feeling well but will be ready for the championship match.

The Lady Mariners joined the Lady Thunder in a repeat of last season’s finals by disposing of tournament surprise Saint Clare College of Caloocan, 25-23, 25-13 and 25-20.  PMMS coach Robert Buenamente vowed that his wards will give RTU a good match for all to enjoy.

Meanwhile, PMMS clinched the first spot in the Men’s Division by outclassing New Era University in straight sets, 25-15, 25-23 and 25-21, in a match characterized by long rallies.  RTU then followed suit by dumping guest team Holy Angel University in a similar three-set match, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-12.

The trophies for the champion team as well as the individual awardees will be handed out immediately after the games on Wednesday.  Players from the semifinalist squads are expected to dominate the awards.
