NCRUCLAA: PMMS d. Makati, 97-69

NCRUCLAA on Facebook     QUEZON CITY – Philippine Merchant Marine School displayed its deep bench in frustrating University of Makati, 97-69, in the penultimate game of the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) elimination phase at the Colegio de San Lorenzo Gym Friday (March 3).  Coach Aldrin Morante had the luxury of giving his role players exposure as they gird for the quarterfinals next week.

The Herons were only in the contest in the first period as they battled through six deadlocks and seven lead changes behind the big baskets of Aliane Lapasaran.  Domark Matillano kept the Mariners within striking distance before he was joined in the second period by Richmond Mabaquiao and team skipper Elvin Chan in putting the Las Pinas City-based quintet on top for good by halftime, 50-34.

By the third, Matillano was still into his scoring ways as the lead slowly became insurmountable.  Still, the PMMS reserves and role players made the best of their opportunity by showing unrelenting spirit and further escalating their advantage to as much as 32 big markers, 93-61.

Matillano again paced the Mariners with 21 points in 21 minutes on the court.  Richmond Mabaquiao was next with 13 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes.

EJ Alvin Redoblado topped the Herons with 23 points, 10 coming in the final period, followed by Lapasaran who finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.  Despite having only a single victory to show in seven games, Makati coach Marangal Gonzales was still satisfied with the team’s performance considering this was their first major competition since being assembled last year.
