NCRUCLAA: EAC-Cavite d. Don Bosco, 67-58

NCRUCLAA on Facebook     PARANAQUE CITY – Nothing was at stake except pride, a little bragging rights and avoiding the ignominy of a winless season.  In their final assignment, Emilio Aguinaldo College-Cavite finally chalked up its first win at the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) Basketball games at the expense of fellow also-ran Don Bosco Technical College, 67-58, at the A. R. Valdez Hall of PATTS College of Aeronautics Thursday (March 2).

Despite their winless statuses entering the contest, both teams engaged each other with championship intensity. Playing his best game of the tournament, Elmer Yumul already tallied 11 points and seven rebounds as he pushed the Vanguard to the their biggest lead of the game just before the halftime break, 37-17.

Hoping to cap his tournament-long personal brilliance, Greywolves wunderkind CJ Carandang unloaded an eye-popping 19 markers in the third period and DBTC suddenly saw itself trailing by a mere field goal entering the final 10 minutes, 49-51.  Carandang was not yet finished as he continued to apply pressure on the opposition by clustering five straight points to threaten for the last time, 54-56.

That was the cue for Yumul to continue from where he left off in the first half by spearheading an 11-1 counterattack along with Nemesis Dizon to deliver the virtual knockout punch, 67-55.  A last minute triple by Erwin Ramilo settled the final score.

“We entered the NCRUCLAA acknowledging that we are a young team and we are still learning but after seven games there is still more work to be done,” said winning coach Azlie Guro.  “At this point, the coaching staff will now identify who among the team can be our building blocks for the future – we start strong and finish stronger.”

Yumul powered EAC with 18 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks in only 23 minutes of action.  JJ Dultra followed with nine points.

The ever-prolific Carandang led all scorers with 35 points on top of 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Cris Ambrosio was next with only six markers.
