QUEZON CITY – Playing with their season on the line, De La Salle University-Dasmarinas summoned all its strengths to escape with a thrilling 84-80 victory over a very tough Philippine State College of Aeronautics at the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) Basketball tournament at the Colegio de San Lorenzo Gym last Wednesday (March 1). The win meant the winning Patriots tying the Iron Eagles at 3-3 for Fourth Place and the final quarterfinal seat for Group B.
Returning to active duty after recovering from an arm injury, Jenesis Remonte converted the crucial three-point play off the fifth and final foul of Mark Louie Jimenez at the 40-second to push DLSU ahead for good, 81-80. The Patriots then completed a key defensive stop and proceeded to melt the time away by passing the ball around.
As the shot clock waned, Pacholo Loor was forced to take a shot that bounced off the rim but Kobe Caronongan heroically grabbed the offensive rebound and was quickly fouled with 1.6 seconds to play. At the same time, PhilSCA coach Joel Gragasin was slapped a technical foul for excessive complaining and throwing his pen into the playing court thus leading to a total of three free throw conversions by the Patriots to preserve the result.
It was an amazing rally by DLSU from as much as 12 markers down in the fourth period, 60-72. John Cantimbuhan, Egie Boy Mojica and Jastine Amponin took turns chipping away from the Iron Eagles’ lead to set the stage for Remonte’s big play.
Cantimbuhan returned from a one-game suspension to lead the Patriots wth 10 of his 16 points in the fourth period. Amponin, Caronongan and Loor provided excellent support with 13 points each.
The Patriots also survived the outstanding individual performance of Rodelle Bilar who carried PhilSCA’s fight with 18 of his 31 points in the final canto on top of six rebounds and four steals. Arvin Patricio likewise had good personal numbers with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
