MANDALUYONG CITY – Defending champion Rizal Technological University formally marched into the semifinal round of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Men’s Volleyball tournament by taking care of Philippine Christian University in straight sets, 25-19, 25-8 and 25-8, at the RTU Gym Monday (February 27). The Blue Thunder’s opponent in Monday’s knockout match was left unclear after a major development rocked the tournament that resumed play after a two-week break.
New Era University topped Group A after winning by default over Holy Angel University in a meeting of undefeated squads. Apparently, the now second place HAU put on hold all its off-campus activities in light of the recent bus accident that killed several students of another school during a field trip in Rizal Province.
(UPDATE: Holy Angel University has agreed to play their final elimination phase game against New Era University on March 1 at the NEU Gym. Both teams are assured of semifinal berths)
CDSL claimed third place and its first win by squeezing past winless AMA University in four sets, 25-14, 28-26, 20-25 and 25-21. In the day’s other match, Philippine Merchant Marine School improved its chances for the second semifinal seat in Group B by taming Our Lady of Fatima University in three sets, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-20.
The Mariners can claim an outright seat if they get past PCU in their final game on Wednesday (March 1) at the NEU Gym starting at 8:00 AM. The match will be followed by four Women’s Division matches to complete the elimination phase.
HAU’s new policy also affected their campaign in the distaff side as their Women’s team defaulted against Saint Clare College of Caloocan. The development gave the Lady Saints a free ride into the semifinals and will dispute the top seeding in Group A with defending champion RTU in their final assignment.
In other completed Women’s Division matches, PMMS claimed a semifinal berth after it trimmed CDSL in straight sets, 25-16, 25-15 and 25-22 while NEU sent PCU to its fourth straight loss, 25-8, 25-16 and 25-16.
CDSL and NEU sport similar 2-1 win-loss records and will dispute the other semifinal berth on Wednesday. Both the semifinals and finals will be a one-match affairs on March 6 and 8 at the RTU Gym.
