NCRUCLAA: San Lorenzo d. PhilSCA, 86-66

NCRUCLAA on Facebook     MAKATI CITY – Colegio de San Lorenzo kept its National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) perfect record intact via an 86-66 whitewashing of dangerous Philippine State College of Aeronautics Monday morning (February 20) at the University of Makati Gym.  A strong second period performance was the key to turn the once tight contest into a blowout as the Griffins coasted to their fifth straight triumph.

Charles Callano came off the bench and scattered 11 points in the pivotal period as San Loenzo stretched their three-point lead after the opening canto into a 44-32 cushion by halftime, 44-32.  The Iron Eagles opened the second half with three unanswered triples by Jay Gumban, Mark Jimenez and Mark Capricho to threaten, 41-44, but it was quickly defused by timely hits by Callano, Louie Vargas and James Alvarado who all popped in seven markers to push the Griffins beyond reach.

San Lorenzo actually started the game with 17-0 burst but it was soon neutralized by PhilSCA going on an 18-0 run of their own. Tempers flared early leading to the ejection of Iron Eagle reserve big man Jeff Evangelista with 58 ticks left in the first quarter for unsportsmanlike behavior.

Callano topped the Griffins with 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists in 27 minutes on the floor. Fellow guard Thristan Laman supported him with 17 markers and five steals while Louie Vargas notched another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Arvin Patricio was the high man for the Iron Eagles with 30 points and seven rebounds but the effort was not enough as they dropped to 3-2. Rodelle Billar followed with 12 points.
