RTU, PMMS Pace NAASCU Volleyball

NAASCU on Facebook    MANDALUYONG CITY – Defending champion Rizal Technological University and last year’s runner-up Philippine Merchant Marine School assumed the leadership of their respective groups at the resumption of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Volleyball tournaments at the RTU Gym Wednesday (February 8).  Both the Lady Thunder and Lady Mariners now carry 2-0 win-loss cards.

RTU displayed its bench depth in defeating Group A debutante Holy Angel University in straight sets, 25-9, 25-16 and 25-21 as Coach Edgar Barroga opted to allow this reserves and rookies to finish the third set.  PMMS also had an easy time in sending Philippine Christian University to its second straight loss in Group B, 25-13, 25-17 and 25-16.

Saint Clare College of Caloocan also shared the limelight by wielding the upset axe on last season’s semifinalist AMA University, 25-18, 25-18, 22-25 and 25-17, sealing the match with a service ace. The Lady Saints under Coach Cliff Florentino thus matched their win total from last season and sent the Lady Titans to their second straight setback in Group A.

Colegio de San Lorenzo also opened its campaign on a positive note by turning back opening day winner Our Lady of Fatima University in four sets, 25-14, 19-25, 25-15 and 25-22.

Meanwhile, action in the Men’s Division got underway last Monday (February 6) at the same venue.  Last season’s winner RTU opened defense of its title by slipping past PMMS, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-12.

In the other matches, Holy Angel swept AMA, 25-18, 25-21 and 25-16, while New Era survived San Lorenzo, 25-13, 25-13, 22-25 and 25-21.  In the nightcap, Fatima dominated PCU, 25-9, 25-18 and 25-14.
