PARANAQUE CITY – Technological Institute of the Philippines had to work extra hard against a vastly improved Don Bosco Technical College and barge into the win column via the 79-62 decision Thursday (February 2) at the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) Basketball games at the Olivarez College Gym. In the end, the height and heft advantage of the Engineers prevailed over the speed of the much smaller Greywolves who remained in search of their first win.
Jay Gadon muscled his way over all defenses thrown at him and accounted for 12 points in the first period alone as TIP surged ahead with nine unanswered points, 23-17. Earlier, Don Bosco managed to lead for the first time in three games, 17-14.
The Greywolves proved to be a tough customer as team leader CJ Carandang went on a scoring spree of his own in the second period as TIP held on to a shaky 37-33 advantage at the halftime break. With Carandang lapsing into foul trouble in the third period and forced to sit down, the Engineers finally took advantage with Gadon, Alex Ramos and Kevin Lara taking turns at puncturing the hoop to stretch their lead to as much as 25 points, 79-54, before the Greywolves scored the contest’s final eight markers.
Gadon powered the Engineers with 21 points and 10 rebounds followed by Ramos with 12 points and 13 rebounds. TIP clearly won the battle for rebounds, 66-38, but nearly faltered after committing 22 turnovers that led to 19 Don Bosco points.
Carandang had another good individual outing with 25 points and six rebounds while Erwin Ramilo was the only other Greywolf in twin digits with 11, eight coming in the fourth period. Don Bosco’s performance was a far cry from their first two games which they lost via blowouts – 105-61 against De Ocampo Memorial College last January 19 and 113-48 versus Rizal Technological University last January 26.
