PARANAQUE CITY – Rizal Technological University maintained its undefeated record by trouncing home side Olivarez College, 82-71, at the resumption of the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) Basketball games at the Olivarez College Gym Thursday morning (February 2). Cyrus Tabi exploded at just the right time to repel the late threat and preserve the win, the Blue Thunder’s third in as many games and the provisional solo lead in Group A.
RTU was well in control of the game, allowing the Sea Lions to take a 7-4 lead before finally buckling down to work and taking the first period with Tabi and Kerr Bangeles at the firing end, 20-16. The high-scoring duo was not yet done as Roque Estoce joined the parade and pushed RTU to their biggest lead of the game towards the end of the third period, 55-44.
Just as the Sea Lions were making one final attempt to salvage the contest, Nicole Liquinan canned two crucial triples early in the fourth canto and Tabi scattered seven markers within the final two minutes that gave them sufficient breathing room with a minute to play, 77-68. Bangeles likewise capped his good play by submitting RTU’s last five points that sealed the deal.
Tabi was all over the court with 23 points, three rebounds and three assists for Player of the Game honors. Bangeles followed with 21 points as the Blue Thunder survived the disqualification on fouls of big men Jonathan Boholano and Johndel Flores.
