NCRUCLAA on Facebook     MAKATI CITY – After dropping their season opener, Philippine Merchant Marine School vented their ire on an unsuspecting De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, 95-75, in the main game Monday (January 23) of the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) Basketball tournament at the University of Makati Gym.  Considered one of the favorites to win the crown, the Mariners wasted no time in dismantling the suddenly lackluster Patriots by grabbing the first period, 20-9, behind the big plays of team captain Elvin Chan and Richmond Gilbero.

It was an all-PMMS show from there as they continuously bombarded the Patriots from all corners of the court.  Domark Matillano personified the Mariners’ relentless attack by unloading five triples en route to erecting their biggest lead of the game late in the third period, 74-36.

With the game’s outcome long decided, the Patriots tried their best to end the otherwise forgettable contest on a positive not and they managed to close in slightly but the deficit was just too much. Even if DLSU was able to outscore PMMS in the final frame, 33-19, the Mariners were able to pop in timely hits to stem the Patriots’ repeated attempts to rally back.

Matillano was named as Player of the Game after finishing with 30 points, 16 coming in the third period, to go with eight rebounds and two assists.  Gilbero chipped in 16 while Chan added 15 markers as the Mariners evened their win-loss record to 1-1 after losing to Colegio de San Lorenzo, 59-74, last January 17.

Pacholo Loor paced the now 1-1 Patriots with 20 of his 25 points coming in the fourth period.  John Cantimbuhan was limited to only 15 points this time after he torched the University of Makati with 31 points in their 97-64 win last January 19.
