NCRUCLAA: San Lorenzo d. Saint Francis, 87-67

NCRUCLAA on Facebook     MAKATI CITY – The projected dream matchup for two undefeated teams fizzled out as Colegio de San Lorenzo made easy work of Saint Francis of Assisi College, 87-67, at the resumption of the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) Basketball games at the University of Makati Gym Monday (January 23).  The Griffins banked on a strong third period anchored on a barrage of triples by Jan Dominic Formento and the inside forays of Louie Vargas to get their second win in as many starts.

Playing without prized center Jun Gabriel who sat out the game due to a previous commitment with his commercial league team, the rest of the team stepped up and held on to a slim 36-35 advantage at the halftime break.  Defense also served the Griffins well as they put the handcuffs on Doves leading scorers Luke Parcero and Paulo Castro to limit Saint Francis to only 19 markers while unloading 31 of their own.

Formento was not yet done as he combined with King Astrero in giving the Griffins their biggest lead of the contest, 79-55.  From there, it was all smooth sailing for San Lorenzo who opted to slow down the game and take advantage of the clock.

Charles Callano powered the Griffins with 17 points and seven assists followed by Formento who made all his 16 points in the second half.  Vargas claimed his second straight Player of the Game award with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Parcero paced the Doves with 21 points followed by Castro with 18.  The Doves’ chances suffered due to their 24 turnovers against only 13 for the Griffins thus negating their superior shooting clip of 54% (29/54) compared to the 46% of their opponents (32/36).

How They Scored:

SAN LORENZO (87) – Callano 17, Formento 16, Vargas 14, Astrero 14, Baldevia 8, Gojar 8, Alvarado 7, Marticio 3, Calizo 0, Laman 0, Jimenez 0.
