MAKATI CITY – Philippine State College of Aeronautics soared to their second straight victory by surviving University of Makati, 94-89, in continuing action from the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) Basketball tournament. The visiting Iron Eagles bucked the hostile home crowd at the UMak Gym to earn a share of the early league leadership while keeping the host Herons winless.
Rodelle Bilar scored PhilSCA’s final seven points to hold off UMak’s late charge. Kim Ongpauco buried a triple to threaten, 88-89, but failed to connect on his bonus free throw paving the way for Bilar to bail out his side with a timely basket with 1:07 to play, 91-88.
Jerico Estaris provided one last gasp for the Herons with a free throw split, 89-91, but the Iron Eagles would not be denied as Bilar made three of his next four free throw attempts to seal the deal. Easily, Bilar was promptly named Player of the Game.
Bilar sizzled with 30 points, 13 coming in the first period and reserving his energy for their crucial fourth period drive. Arvin Patricio supported Bilar with 10 of his 25 points in the fourth period on top of five rebounds and seven assists.
Estaris was the high man for UMak with 25 points and seven rebounds. Ongpauco followed with 18 markers.
