PASAY CITY – Colegio de San Lorenzo scored a surprisingly easy romp over Philippine Merchant Marine School, 74-59, on Day One of the National Capital Region Universities and Colleges of Luzon Athletic Association (NCRUCLAA) at the Cuneta Astrodome Tuesday (January 17). Coach Boni Garcia had the luxury of giving extended time to his role players with the game firmly in hand by the second half.
Center Jun Gabriel came off the bench two minutes into the contest and promptly scattered 12 points, five rebounds and six assists. Coach Garcia then gave his top big man a rest after 14 minutes on the floor but the excellent play of the substitutes was enough for Gabriel to sit down for the remainder of the match.
Louie Vargas took over at the center position and providing spunk and energy to unload eight points that signalled the Griffins’ breakaway by halftime, 40-27. San Lorenzo went on to lead by as high as 25 markers late in the third canto, 59-34.
Guard Charles Callano paced the Griffins with 15 points, five rebounds and six assists. Vargas added one more basket in the fourth period to finish with 10 points and eight rebounds and Best Player honors.
San Lorenzo led by a single point after the first period, 19-18, as PMMS shooter Domark Matillano got hot early with 10 markers. However, Matillano’s offense suddenly disappeared and that provided the cue for the Griffins to pull away for good by outscoring the Mariners in the second, 21-9.
Matillano recovered his form in the second half but it was too late and ached for support from his teammates. He finished with 21 points via three triples while Elvin Chan was next with only eight points.
