DUMAGUETE CITY – Reigning National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) overall champion Rizal Technological University capped a successful campaign in the 21st UNIGAMES over the weekend by snaring a pair of team championships. The compact Mandaluyong City-based school successfully retained their title in Women’s Basketball while ending years of frustration by finally bagging the Men’s Table Tennis crown.
The Lady Thunder downed no less than long-time bitter rival Centro Escolar University in the one-game finale at the Lamberto Macias Sports Center, 55-54, for a clean sweep of their six games. The wards of Coach Julian Bagares III bested CEU, Holy Angel University, Holy Cross of Davao College and College of Saint Benilde in the eliminations before repeating over HCDC in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, the Table Tennis of Coach Arden Mark Santos team tasted gold after years of finishing in Third Place. Their female counterparts also did not go home empty handed as they took Third Place.
The twin victories somewhat cushioned the heartbreaking loss of the Blue Thunder Basketball team to University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in the gold medal game, 61-69. RTU bulldozed through the opposition in the elimination round and then clipped Holy Angel in the crossover semis but had to play the Rams without head coach Johnedel Cardel who rushed back to Manila to attend the PBA Draft.
RTU also fared well in Athletics held at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Memorial Coliseum by snatching four gold and six silver medals. The school also fielded entries in both Indoor Volleyball and Beach Volleyball.
