NAASCU: Lyceum-Subic d. Saint Clare, 81-76

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – Lyceum of Subic Bay needed a herculean effort from Fabrice Siewe to subdue Saint Clare College of Caloocan, 84-63, and keep its championship hopes alive at the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) at the Rizal Technological University Gym Saturday (October 8).  The 6’10” behemoth from Cameroon played his best game of the season as he transformed into a virtual one-man wrecking crew for the Sharks.

Siewe did his biggest damage in the third period as he combined with Armando Timpog to break the game’s final deadlock, 39-39, and pull away considerably.  Carl Michael Lumbao then shook off back pains that hampered him in the first half to score six points at the end of the period to give Lyceum a comfortable 63-52 advantage entering the final 10 minutes.

Siewe was not yet finished as he and Allen Fomera pushed the Sharks to their biggest lead of the game, 75-60.  The Saints though showed signs of life as Russell Fuentes came off the bench for the first time to hit back-to-back triples and threaten with four minutes to play, 66-75.

Timpog cooled the rally with two free throws he took in place of the injured Kevin Falaminiano and Siewe added another basket to give the Sharks a 79-66 cushion with 3:15 to go.

Refusing to quit, Saint Clare staged one final rally to cut the deficit to only six markers at the 42-second mark, 73-79.  Lumbao was then caught stepping on the sideline with the ball but the Saints failed to capitalize as Aris Dionisio missed his triple to seal their fate.

Siewe finished with an amazing 35 points on 15 of 22 shooting from the field on top of 16 rebounds and three blocks as the runaway choice for Best Player.  Lumbao followed with 10 points.

Paeng Rebugio led the Saints with 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.  Dionisio was next with 15 points and 13 rebounds as a combined 28 of 78 shooting clip really pulled down the team.

Both teams will have less than 24 hours to prepare as Game Three is scheduled for October 9 (Sunday) at 11:00 AM at RTU.  The Saints took the best-of-three series opener, 80-70, last October 6 (Thursday) at the Makati Coliseum.
