NAASCU: October 1 Juniors Recap

NAASCU on Facebook     QUEZON CITY – Rizal Technological University and Our Lady of Fatima University advanced to the semifinals of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Juniors Division by knocking out separate opponents Saturday morning (October 1) at the AMA University Gym.

RTU used a strong fourth push powered by the combined 20 points of Jonathan Boholano and Philip Redondo to turn back a tough New Era University 77-68.  New Era almost pulled the upset with prolific guard Jefferson Comia scattering 16 of his game-high 25 points in the third period to put his side on top entering the fourth, 53-51.

It was a big boost for the Junior Thunder as they snapped their two-game losing skid at the right time.  The boys of Coach Arlene Rodriguez won their first seven games before back-to-back defeats sent them all the way down to fourth spot at the close of the eliminations.

In the second game, solid outside shooting was the key as the Junior Phoenix booted out Philippine Merchant Marine School, 74-63.  Tied after the first half, Angelito Eugenio dropped three triples to help break the once close game wide open.

Eugenio led the Junior Phoenix of Coach Don Villamin with 26 points.  The defense allowed PMMS center Amonique Kue to do his thing by scoring 30 points but focused on stopping the rest of the team.

The Junior Thunder will now play AMA University while the Junior Phoenix tangles with Saint Clare College of Caloocan in the semifinals this Monday (October 3) at the Makati Coliseum.  Both AMA and Saint Clare will have the twice to beat advantage.
