NAASCU: Lyceum-Subic d. PMMS, 76-66

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – Lyceum of Subic Bay ended the eight-game winning streak of Philippine Merchant Marine School, 76-66, as the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Playoffs continued at the Rizal Technological University Gym Saturday afternoon (October 1). It was truly sweet revenge for the same Sharks that fell to the Mariners, 92-114, when the streak began last September 12.

Just like in their initial meeting, PMMS returned from a one-week break but this time it was the other way around as it was the Sharks’ guns doing the rapid firing from the get go.  Starters Carl Michael Lumbao and Ian Castillo combined for 15 markers as LSB surged ahead after one period, 26-13.

In their elimination round encounter, the Mariners bombed the Sharks for 13 triples.  This time, the shooting did not cooperate as they could only squeeze out two from 29 attempts the whole game.

Reygie Debulcos hit PMMS’ first triple just as the first half was nearing its close but it gave the Mariners the lead for the last time, 37-36.  Fabrice Siewe answered with two free throws and Allen Fomera completed a three-point play to push the Sharks back ahead at halftime, 41-37.

Lyceum did a good job of maintaining their distance with Armando Timpog coming off the bench to take over the scoring chores from Lumbao and Siewe.  The Mariners gave it one last heave with Elvin Chan’s three-point play at the two-minute mark that cut the deficit to single digits, 63-72, but this was quickly snuffed by back-to-back field goals from Lyndon del Rosario as the Sharks coasted to the win.

Timpog got the nod as Best Player with 15 points and eight rebounds.  Lumbao also had 15 points to go with five rebounds and six assists while Siewe also had 15 points on top of 15 rebounds.

Debulcos paced the Mariners with 16 points and five rebounds.  Jess Quilatan was the only other teammate in twin digits with 10 points and six rebounds.

The deciding game will be played this Monday (October 3) at the Makati Coliseum starting at 2:00 PM.  The winner will advance to play the Saint Clare College of Caloocan Saints in a best-of-three semifinal series.
