PASAY CITY – University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta rode on their torrid shooting in the first half to subdue top seed San Beda College, 87-83, and force a winner take all game showdown for a championship berth at the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tuesday afternoon (September 30) at the Mall of Asia Arena. Gab Dagangon capped his game-long brilliance with the go-ahead basket with 19 seconds to go, 85-83, and Keith Pido sealed the deal with two free throws to move the Las Pinas City-based quintet to a win away from their first trip to the finals since 2004.
With Daryl Singontiko, JG Ylagan and Dagangon waxing hot early, the Altas raced to a 20-9 lead after one period. The Red Lions though would answer back behind the one-man show of Robert Bolick but Perpetual Help held form to hang on to the halftime lead, 41-36.
Proof of San Beda’s woes was their 14 of 36 (0.389) shooting clip compared to Perpetual Help’s 15 of 25 (0.600). That all changed as Arnaud Noah and AC Soberano awoke from their sluggish first half to recapture the upper hand on a Noah basket, 53-52.
The Altas recovered with Dagangon continuing his scoring ways and Bright Akhuetie flushing an emphatic dunk at the two-minute warning for the upper hand, 83-81. Davon Potts then countered with the equalizer, 83-83, before Dagangon’s heroics.
The Red Lions had a chance to steal the game but Soberano missed his triple attempt. Not yet in the penalty, San Beda was forced to give up back to back fouls before sending Pido to the line for the game clincher.
Dagangon scored 11 of his 27 points in the fourth period. Akhuetie was next with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Bolick scored 14 of his 21 points in the second period but was rendered scoreless the entire second half. Soberano was limited to only two points in the first half but unloaded four triples in the second to finish with 16 markers.
The decider will be played this Tuesday (October 4) still at the MOA Arena. The other semifinal bracket involves Arellano University and Mapua Institute of Technology.
