MANDALUYONG CITY – De Ocampo Memorial College finally put an end to its wild four-game losing skid in grand fashion by beating no less than heavily favored Saint Clare College of Caloocan, 95-91, at the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) last Wednesday (September 21) at the Rizal Technological University Gym. More importantly, Wednesday’s win returned the Cobras back into the eight-team playoff circle where they were once entrenched as high as Second Place before their woes began.
Dahrell Caranguian was his usual prolific self in drilling the go-ahead triple that ignited a 10-1 blast in partnership with Igi Boy Sabasaje that gave the Cobras a huge 90-83 lead exactly at the two-minute warning. Paeng Rebugio rallied the Saints with back-to-back baskets and Jordan Rios sank a free throw to threaten, 88-90, and 46 seconds on the clock.
However, time was not on the side of the Saints as they bungled their next offensives. As the Saints were forced to give up fouls to stop the time, Jhonard Clarito and Brian Gallardo stepped up and converted on their pressure-laden free throws to hold off the Saints’ surge.
With no less than DOMC President Dr. Vicente Antonio de Ocampo in attendance for the first time this season, Caranguian went to work at once and exploded for 13 points in the first period and then caught fire anew with 11 in the final period to finish with 33 points and five rebounds. Redel Fabro battled the taller Saint Clare frontline to register 13 points and 12 rebounds.
After beginning the season with a seven-game winning streak, the Saints are now on the opposite direction with their third straight debacle. Rojay Santos came off the bench to lead them with 23 points from three triples while Rios was next with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Cobras improved to 7-5 with one more game to go against Manuel L. Quezon University (6-4). The Saints dropped to 7-3 with Lyceum of Subic Bay (7-3), Colegio de San Lorenzo (4-7) and New Era University (2-10) remaining on their schedule.
