MANDALUYONG CITY – Already out of contention, Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology played the spoiler’s role to the hilt as they derailed the playoff hopes of Colegio de San Lorenzo after an 84-80 drubbing at the Rizal Technological University Gym Wednesday (September 21) at the resumption of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU). Tolits Natividad was brilliant all game long while Andreas Cahilig put in a timely defensive gem to give the Red Fox only their second win in 11 games.
Bryan Hilario hit a clutch basket just as the 24-second shot clock was about to expire to give EARIST a solid 82-77 lead. Free throws from Rick Baldevia and Raymond Alvarado allowed the Griffins to come back and threaten 80-82.
Cahilig saved his best for last as he swatted away the attempt of a driving Mark Kenneth Carongoy that could have forced overtime. The loose ball scramble resulted in a baseball pass to the waiting Hilario as he completed an unmolested layup with still seven seconds remaining for the final score.
Natividad was named as Best Player with 28 points, six rebounds, five assists and seven steals. Cahilig followed with 17 points, 15 rebounds and two crucial blocks.
The Griffins had hoped to sweep all their remaining three games to have a shot at the playoffs. Now at 4-7, they still have a minute chance if they sweep their last two games and pray that some of the top teams start losing.
Jun Gabriel had another good outing for San Lorenzo with 23 points and 14 rebounds but was limited to only two points in the fourth period. Irvin Ancheta was next with 14 points on six of seven shooting from the field.
Meanwhile, Our Lady of Fatima University became the first time to notch their ninth victory after AMA University failed to show up in time for their 8:00 AM encounter. The win improves the chances of the Phoenix of snatching one of two outright semifinal berths.
