MANDALUYONG CITY – Colegio de San Lorenzo picked up a very important win at the expense of New Era University, 84-63, at the resumption of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) at the Rizal Technological University Gym Friday (September 16). The win, the Griffins’ third in nine starts, boosted their chances of sneaking into the playoffs amidst a campaign that has seen them blow hot and cold.
After a slow start, the Griffins buckled down to work with substitutes Mark Kenneth Carongoy and Rick Baldevia leading the charge en route to a comfortable 44-33 margin at halftime. By the third period, the Griffins unleashed a crippling 14-0 run that pushed them ahead further, 58-33.
The rout was on as Jun Gabriel dunked his way through to give San Lorenzo its biggest lead, 80-48. New Era though managed to slightly trim the final deficit via late baskets by AJ Ramos and Clyde Reyes.
Gabriel made 14 of his team-best 18 points in the second half on top of eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Carongoy added 17 points and four rebounds.
John Akindele paced New Era with 16 points and 18 rebounds but was held scoreless in the second half. Reyes was next with 13 points as New Era sank further down the rankings with their seventh loss in nine games.
The Griffins face the tough task of winning at least three of their remaining four games against Enderun Colleges, EARIST, AMA University and Saint Clare College to have at least a chance at playoff slot. Only the top eight among the 14 teams will advance with San Lorenzo currently entrenched at 10th Place, two games behind Eighth Place Philippine Christian University (5-4).
