NAASCU: PCU d. De Ocampo, 94-86

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – Philippine Christian University survived the record 45-point explosion of Dahrell Caranguian to hack out the 94-86 victory over De Ocampo Memorial College at the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Basketball tournament at the Rizal Technological University Gym Sunday afternoon (September 11).  As the prolific guard’s production came to a halt that was the cue for the Dolphins to seize control and even their win-loss card at 3-3.

Caranguian dribbled the length of the court for a powerful layup, his 45th point and the lead for the Cobras with 5:41 to play, 80-70. Free throws from Reyl Vasquez and Von Tambeling tied the game and Yves Sazon restored the upper hand to PCU for good via a jumper, 82-80, and 4:26 to play.

With Caranguian silenced, the other Cobras had trouble finding the hoop.  Tambeling and Michael Ayonayon continued to hit the big shots to mark the Dolphins’ breakaway, with their leading reaching as much as 10 with 30 seconds to go, 94-84.

Tambeling again scored when it matters the most, scattering 26 of his 29 points in the second half to go with 14 rebounds.  Sazon also had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds while Ayonayon had 17 points as well.

Caranguian actually survived a cut on the left eyebrow in the first period and early foul trouble to set the new record and better the 42 points made by Jun Gabriel of Colegio de San Lorenzo two days earlier in a losing effort against Manuel L. Quezon University.  Redel Fabro was the only other Cobra in twin digits with 14 points and five rebounds as they saw their eye-popping winning streak stopped at six games while absorbing their second loss in the tournament.
