NAASCU: PCU d. San Lorenzo, 94-86

NAASCU on Facebook     MAKATI CITY – Von Tambeling picked the right time to unleash his scoring prowess as he exploded for 22 points in the fourth period alone to lead Philippine Christian University in subduing Colegio de San Lorenzo, 94-86, in continuing action at the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament at the Makati Coliseum Monday (September 5).  Tambeling’s scoring spree allowed the Dolphins to end their two-game losing streak and return to playoff contention at 2-2.

The Griffins clung to a 63-57 advantage entering the final period.  Suddenly, the scoring pace picked up with San Lorenzo’s Raymond Alvarado engaging Tambeling in a shootout but the move backfired as latter began to sink his triples, including one that gave PCU the lead for good, 74-73.

Overall, the Dolphins outscored the Griffins in the final canto, 37-23.  At several points, Tambeling had more individual points compared to the entire San Lorenzo quintet.

Tambeling had a grand total of 34 points to match the record he set in their opening game against EARIST.  Michael Ayonayon survived early foul problems to finish with 18 points, 10 made in the first period to push the Dolphins slightly ahead, 24-23..

Alvarado led the way for PCU with 16 points and four assists.  Jun Gabriel followed was next with 15 points and eight rebounds.

SAN LORENZO (86) – Alvarado 16, Gabriel 15, Callano 13, Carongoy 11, Borja 9, Foronda 9, Ajero 9, Vargas 4, Laman 0, Ancheta 0, Baldevia 0.

Period Scores: 24-23, 40-39, 57-63, 94-86.
