MANDALUYONG CITY – Enderun Colleges joined Saint Clare College at the top of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament after dismantling no less than last year’s semifinalist Philippine Christian University, 96-86, Friday night (September 2) at the Rizal Technological University Gym. The Titans and Saints carry similar 4-0 win-loss cards with Lyceum of Subic Bay half a game behind at 3-0.
All the Titans needed was a jackrabbit 8-0 start and they never relinquished the lead nor allowed the Dolphins to tie. Enderun even managed to lead by as high as 20 markers, 69-49, late in the third period.
The potent trio of Joshua Grilli, Willy Kamguia and Colince Kaptue all contributed similar double-doubles of 18 points and 12 rebounds each. Also hitting heavily was Mark Javen Gatdula with 13 points and 12 rebounds as the Titans outrebounded the Dolphins, 58-37.
PCU tried to stage several comebacks with their three-point shooting as their best weapon led Fidel Castro and Michael Ayonayon. Still, the Titans held on tough as Grilli and Kamguia put in the crucial baskets and crashed the boards especially after Kaptue fouled out with a good seven minutes left in the game.
Von Tambeling came off the bench to pace the Dolphins with 27 points including 11 in a furious fourth period rally. Ayonayon also had 12 points in the fourth period to finish with a total of 19 points and four steals.
Enderun and Saint Clare will play separate opponents this coming Monday (September 5) at the Makati Coliseum. Should they both be successful, the stage will be set for a marquee matchup between two 5-0 teams when the Titans hosts the Saints at the Enderun Colleges campus on Wednesday (September 7).
