MANDALUYONG CITY – AMA University is now on a two-game winning streak after outlasting a very game City University of Pasay, 84-76, in continuing action from the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament at the Rizal Technological University Gym Friday (September 2). Jerome Ortega starred all game long but it was the fourth period heroics of Arvin Fuentes that saved the day for the Titans.
“As one of the seniors of this team, I have taken up our coach’s challenge to be the leader and make use of our experience in the PBA D-League,” said Ortega, who top scored with 20 points on top of seven rebounds. Ortega’s efforts though nearly went to waste had not Fuentes went on a scoring spree to ward off Pasay’s repeated rallies.
Fuentes scattered 13 or his 17 points including a basket that gave AMA an imposing 79-67 advantage entering the final two minutes. The Eagles’ final push allowed them to threaten, 76-80, with 26 seconds left but two free throws each from Fuentes and Ortega iced the game for AMA.
James Solero returned from an eye injury to pace the still winless Eagles with 14 points and 18 rebounds. Edgar Erice followed with 12 points.
