NAASCU: Enderun d. RTU, 72-61

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – Enderun Colleges continued its surprising run at the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament by taming Rizal Technological University, 72-61, at no less than the latter’s home court last Wednesday (August 31).  The win gives the expansion Titans their third win in as many starts to put them in the company of perennial league contenders Saint Clare College of Caloocan and Our Lady of Fatima University at the top of the 14-team standings.

Exchange student Colince Wabo Kaptue proved again to be an intimidating presence underneath the basket as he anchored both the Titans’ defense and offense en route to producing 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Kaptue found a steady frontline partner in Mark Javen Gatdula who submitted 16 points and 11 rebounds as they dominated their RTU counterparts.

Cheered endlessly by their home fans, the Blue Thunder drew strength from their reliable guards with Cyrus Tabi firing 12 of his 25 markers in the fourth period but their rally proved short.  Kerr Bangeles followed with 13 points.

Gatdula completed a crucial three-point play off Nicole Liquinan with 1:55 to play and give Enderun a commanding 64-59 advantage.  Tabi then added two free throws off a Willy Kamguia foul but that proved to be their last hurrah.

An error led to an easy layup for John Arthur Vidal at the 1:26 mark.  This was followed by six more unanswered points that sealed the deal for the Taguig City-based squad.
