NAASCU: Saint Clare d. Pasay, 88-65

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – Playing in his home city did wonders as heralded rookie Paeng Rebugio finally unveiled the game that pundits expected of him as he helped Saint Clare College of Caloocan notch its third win in as many games at the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) held at the Rizal Technological University Gym Wednesday (August 31).  A native of Mandaluyong, Rebugio used the familiar surroundings in powering the Saints’ whitewashing of City University of Pasay, 88-65.

In a game of runs, Michael de Leon unloaded 10 points as the Saints erected an early 15-2 advantage.  That was quickly countered by a 12-0 Eagles run that put them within a point, 14-15.

However, that was the best that CUP could do as their offense ground into a t.  Fourteen unanswered Saint Clare points spanning the first and second periods was only halted by a goaltending violation by Steve Fongue.

A subsequent 18-0 burst by the Saints starring Rebugio and Aris Dionisio gave them their biggest lead and the early knockout blow in the third canto, 57-25.

Rebugio ended up with 19 points, 13 coming in the pivotal third period.  Dionisio flirted anew with a triple double, missing the cut by two steals as he swiped the ball eight times to go with his 12 points and 10 rebounds for his third Best Player award in as many games.

Edgar Erice bucked a swollen knee to pace the still winless Eagles with 17 points.  Francis Macasil, another player forced to play with an injury, came off the bench to pop in 11 points and five rebounds.
