NAASCU: Fatima d. PCU, 81-69

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – Our Lady of Fatima University raced to its third straight victory at the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) by dropping erstwhile undefeated Philippine Christian University, 81-69, at the Rizal Technological University Gym Wednesday (August 31).  The Phoenix had to battle from as much as 16 points down in the third period to fashion out the win.

The Dolphins were enjoying their biggest lead of the game, 53-37, when the Phoenix closed out the third period with a 16-4 run behind Martin Gozum to threaten, 53-57.  With momentum on their side, the Phoenix managed to grab back the lead and pull away on timely baskets by Gozum, Jessiery Pedrosa, John Rovin Datu and Miguel Bryan Cabrera as the Dolphins suddenly imploded.

Gozum scattered 22 points on top of seven rebounds and four assists to earn Best Player honors.  Pedrosa had eight of his 12 points in the fourth period.

Michael Ayonayon leaned on a 13-point second period to finish with a total of 29 points and seven rebounds to lead the Dolphins.  Von Tambeling and Fidel Castro also took turns at having double-digit performances within a period to submit 15 and 13 points respectively.

The Phoenix of Coach Ralph Rivera are now alone at the top with a 3-0 card.  The Dolphins evened their record at 1-1.

Period Scores: 22-25, 33-39, 53-57, 81-69.
