MAKATI CITY – Flashing fierce form, Saint Clare College ran roughshod over an unsuspecting Philippine Merchant Marine School, 85-62, and grab a share of the early lead of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball tournament at the Makati Coliseum Monday (August 29). The season host Saints are now 2-0 while the Mariners dropped to 0-2.
The Saints unveiled a surprise package in guard Irven Palencia who went to work at once to pump in seven points as they ran away with the first period, 23-7. The Mariners were never in the contest as they had difficulty piercing the double-digit deficit barrier.
Palencia’s fine showing paved the way for the entry of substitutes Aris Dionisio and Jordan Rios to continue the onslaught. The duo’s presence allowed the Saints to pull away, allowing Coach Jino Manansala to give considerable time to his role players.
Dionisio was eventually named the game’s Best Player, his second citation in as many games, falling three blocks short of a triple double with seven on top of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Palencia topped the Saints with 16 points while Rios finished with 14.
Reggie Debulcos paced the Mariners with 16 points. Domark Matillano was next with 13 points.
