NAASCU: New Era d. Pasay, 76-69

NAASCU on Facebook     MAKATI CITY – The travails and tribulations of New Era University are now over.  The Hunters finally ended their seven-game losing skid by prevailing over the City University of Pasay, 76-69, in continuing action from the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball games at the Makati Coliseum Monday (August 29).

New Era rookie big man Richard Velchez scored all his nine points in a critical third period romp that broke the game wide open entering the final period, 56-41.  The Eagles tried their best to close behind Francis Macasil and Querubine Padilla but timely baskets by John Akindele and AJ Ramos preserved the win for the Hunters.

Akindele finished with a double-double of 12 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.  Keanu Asistio chipped in eight points and five rebounds.

Jayvee de la Cruz topped the Eagles with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists.  Edgar Erice followed with 11 points as their team fell to 0-2.

The last time the Hunters savored a victory was on August 27, 2014 via a 68-63 decision over then member Diliman Computer Technology Institute Senators at the NEU Gym, the final day of the elimination round.  The Hunters dropped all their six games last season and lost their opening game last Friday against newcomer Manuel L. Quezon University, 70-88.

PASAY (69) – J de la Cruz 15, Erice 11, Solero 9, Macasil 7, Catarbas 7, Padilla 6, Lizardo 5, Pervera 3, Cahansa 2, Gatchalian 2, Penaredondo 2, Castaneda 0, R de la Cruz 0, Acidre 0.

Period Scores: 17-11, 40-28, 56-41, 76-69.
