NAASCU: De Ocampo d. San Lorenzo, 91-77

NAASCU on Facebook     MAKATI CITY – De Ocampo Memorial College barged into the win column at the expense of Colegio de San Lorenzo, 91-77, at the resumption of the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) basketball games at the Makati Coliseum Monday (August 29). The Cobras exhibited a smooth running game and pesky defense, pouncing on the Griffins’ many turnovers to squeeze out the lopsided victory.

San Lorenzo actually took the first period and appeared headed for a blowout but their fortunes took a u-turn in the second period as starting center Jun Gabriel picked up his fourth personal foul with still 7:57 to play and his side on top by seven, 31-24.  That was the cue for the Cobras to go on a 26-8 run to close out the first half anchored on cat-quick guard Dahrrel Caranguian and frontliners Redel Fabro and Jhonard Clarito to pull away and never look, 50-37.

Left with no choice, Coach Boni Garcia had to reinsert the 6’6” Gabriel but it was costly as he was permanently disqualified with his fifth foul in the opening sequences of the fourth period and the Cobras comfortably ahead, 79-59.  De Ocampo’s lead then reached its highest at 23 markers, 84-61, coasting along until the buzzer.

“The team just had a bad case of opening game jitters against RTU last Friday,” said winning Coach Ronnie Dojillo. “They really wanted to bounce back today and show their worth to the audience.”

Caranguian scored 11 of his 29 points in the pivotal second period for Best Player honors.  He was supported by Fabro and Junar Wenceslao with 13 markers apiece.

Kenneth Carongoy led the Griffins with 18 points but went scoreless in the third before closing the game with five in scrub time. Rick Baldevia and Derick Montes followed with 12 each with Montes grabbing 14 rebounds.

Overall, the Griffins had 33 errors which the Cobras translated into 34 turnover points.  The prolonged absence of Gabriel allowed the smaller Cobras to win the battle of the rebounds, 46-45.

De Ocampo lost their opening game against RTU, 78-87.  San Lorenzo had an emphatic 94-79 triumph over the City University of Pasay last August 25 at the packed Cuneta Astrodome.
