PASAY CITY – Colegio de San Lorenzo served notice of its title intentions by smothering City University, 94-79, at the 16th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) last Thursday (August 25). The Griffins survived a predominantly pro-Pasay gallery to hack out the victory, settling the outcome as early as the end of the third period wherein they built a 73-52 margin.
Suiting up after sitting out the last year, Mark Kenneth Carongoy raised eyebrows with an impressive output of 27 points on five out of seven shooting from the three-point line on top of four assists and four steals. Guards Rustom Borja and JC Foronda also found their range early and then padded further their numbers come scrub time to submit 16 points each.
However, it was San Lorenzo center Jun Gabriel who laid the groundwork for the blowout as his defensive presence resulted in 12 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and a lot of intimidation against the much smaller Eagles. By the time Coach Boni Garcia opted to rest his prized big man, the Griffins still managed to stretch their lead which reached its highest a 94-68 in the final minutes before they allowed the Eagles to salvage some pride and score the game’s final 11 points.
Rookie Francis Macasil led the Eagles with 18 points. Team captain Daniel Lizardo followed with 13 points.
