BATANGAS CITY – A new breed of winners emerged at the 40th MILO Marathon Batangas qualifier last Sunday (August 7). Joemarie Jovelo and April Rose Diaz crowned themselves as the best over 21 kilometers to clinch spots at the National Finals this December 4 in Iloilo City,
Jovelo, the back-to-back Puerto Princesa leg 10-kilometer champion in 2013 and 2014, levelled up his strides to win in 1:17:57. Sharing the podium were Mark Anthony Oximar (1:18:58) and Rigino Melvin Siriban (1:25:11).
In the distaff side, Diaz towed the field in 1:34:39 followed by Sandi Menchie Abahan (1:39:33) and Janette Agura (1:52:33). Diaz won Third Place in last year’s Metro Manila qualifiers, Abahan was runner-up in Baguio while Agura was the Calapan City champion.
Making a return to the province’s capital, a total of 20 men and the three women podium finishers out of 124 participants booked their places in Iloilo. The will try to unseat the reigning MILO King Rafael Poliquit and MILO Queen Mary Joy Tabal against the best of the Philippines and a contingent of tested international runners.
The next qualifiers will be held on August 14 in Lucena City. Luzon will have one more qualifier in Naga City on August 21 before the MILO caravan goes on its swing of Visayas and Mindanao.
Other Winners: Philip John Gongob and Maryjoy Motin (10 kilometers), Mark Jhonex Latina and Feiza Lenton (five kilometers), James Ballester and Trisha Mae Loverita (three kilometers).
