QUEZON CITY – Phoenix Petroleum ended its two-game losing skid by halting Blustar Detergent, 108-83, and keep alive its chances for a twice-to-beat advantage in next week’s semifinals of the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach (JCSGO) Gym Tuesday (August 2). The victory came at a no better time for a team hoping to replicate its Cinderella finish in the Aspirants Cup earlier this year.
Prior to their rematch with the Dragons, the Accelerators succumbed to contenders CafeFrance (93-96) and Racal Tiles (88-90) in back-to-back thrillers. In the end, the Aspirants Cup champions gave their opponents one more basketball lesson before they return to Malaysia.
Blustar, which is built around the reigning ASEAN Basketball champion Westports Malaysia Dragons, ended its campaign with two wins against 10 losses. However, they will go home richer in experience and knowledge after battling top-quality opposition over the last two months.
After losing his D-League scoring record to AMA’s James Martinez in the earlier game, Mac Belo torched the Dragons for 23 points and did not even need to score in the final period as the Accelerators were comfortably cruising to the win after the third period, 79-58. Ed Daquioag backed him up with 17 points.
Juami Tiongson, the Dragons’ Filipino reinforcement, capped his stint with 26 points. Ivan Yeo followed with 21 markers.
Phoenix barely escaped Blustar in their first encounter, 97-94, last June 16. The Malaysia-based team’s only wins were against cellar-dweller Topstar ZC Mindanao, 89-75 and 98-93.
As it stands, Racal Tiles (9-2) and defending champion CafeFrance (8-2) hold the inside track on the top two semifinal seeds with the Accelerators (8-3) trailing in third spot. Tanduay Rhum (7-4) is holding firm on the fourth and final seed.
