D-League: Racal d. Tanduay, 90-81

2016 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Racal Tiles enhanced its chances of landing a top two spot in the playoffs of the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup by scuttling rival Tanduay Rhum, 90-81, at the Ynares Sports Arena Thursday evening (July 28).  Gunners Jonathan Grey and Philip Paniamogan delivered the critical points that ensured the win, their ninth in 11 starts and a five-game winning streak.

After easily taking the first period, 27-14, Racal relaxed and allowed the Rhum Masters to go on a 16-2 to run to begin the second and briefly taste the lead on a Rudy Lingganay basket, 30-29.  The Tile Masters regrouped behind Chris Javier and Grey to grab back the upper hand by halftime, 44-37.

“I reminded that team that Tanduay is a dangerous opponent because they are chasing us for the top two positions,” said Coach Carlos Garcia.  “Today’s win is very important to us, all we have to do is win against AMA in our final game and we’re in the top two.”

Tanduay proved to be a tough customer, with Lingganay hitting a triple to threaten for the last time at the midway point of the fourth, 75-77. Grey and Paniamogan came to Racal’s rescue by hitting consecutive field goals that gave them breathing room entering the last two minutes, 82-76.

Both Grey and Paniamogan paced the Tile Masters with 17 points each. The duo accounted for six points each for 12 of Racal’s 23 fourth period points.

Jaymo Eguilos led the Rhum Masters with 16 points and seven rebounds in only his second game of the tournament. Jeoffrey Javillonar was next with 14 points and 12 rebounds put was held to a lone free throw in the fourth as Tanduay fell to 7-4.

The Rhum Masters missed the services of forward Kevin Ferrer, who had to attend to some family matters but will be back for their next game. “We prepared for Kevin but his sudden absence made us change our plans on the spot,” said Coach Garcia.

The top two teams at the end of the elimination round will earn a twice-to-beat advantage over their semifinal opponents.  The semifinals are scheduled for August 11 at the STRIKE Gym in Bacoor City.
