D-League: Blustar d. Topstar, 98-93

2016 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Blustar Detergent survived a late rally by Topstar ZC Mindanao to snap their five-game losing skid, 98-93, in a meeting of the bottom two teams at the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Tuesday evening (July 26).  This marks the Dragons’ second victory in the tournament while the Aguilas remained winless at the cellar in 10 starts.

Juami Tiongson proved to be steady in the clutch as he made a pair of pressure-packed three throws off Al-Raouf Julkipli with nine seconds to play and make it a two-possession game, 97-94.  The Aguilas then threw the ball away with Wong Yi Hou settling the final count with a free throw with two seconds remaining.

Trailing entering the fourth period, 65-76, the Aguilas went on a scoring tear anchored on Choi Ignacio as they seized the lead, 81-80, and 6:54 to play.  Timely shots by Kuek Tian Yuan and Ivan Yeo restored the advantage to Blustar and Tiongson nailed a key triple for a commanding 92-84 cushion entering the final two minutes.

Ignacio continued his scoring spree as he teamed up with JR Cawaling to threaten for the last time, 93-95, and 53 seconds left on the clock.  The Dragons defeated the Aguilas, 89-75, last June 23 in Bacoor City.

Tiongson was on fire all game as he ended up with 32 points.  Kuek followed with 21 and Yeo chipped in 14 in their penultimate game before returning to Malaysia.

Ignacio led the hard luck Aguilas with 22 points, all coming in the second half.  Gino Jumao-as added 19 markers while Dexter Garcia had 16.

TOPSTAR ZC MINDANAO (93) – Ignacio 22, Jumao-as 19, Garcia 16, Cawaling 14, Onde 9, Julkipli 6, Rivera 5, Argamino 2, Ongteco 0, Lacastesantos 0, Tano 0.

Period Scores: 23-18, 44-38, 76-65, 98-93.
