D-League: AMA d. Blustar, 113-84

2016 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – An inspired AMA Online Education clobbered anew Blustar Detergent, 113-84, and continued its quest for a semifinal seat at the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Monday (July 25).  The Titans of Coach Mark Herrera made it back-to-back wins and face the tough task of sweeping their remaining four assignments.

The Dragons were only in the thick of the fight in the first period, with Jaycee Asuncion converting at the buzzer to give the Titans the lead for good, 20-19.  That was the cue for Rashawn McCarthy to lead AMA’s breakaway with help from James Martinez, Ryan Arambulo and Jerome Ortega to pad their halftime lead, 54-41.

The Titans were never threatened from there.  Coach Herrera fielded his role players early and they conspired with Martinez in erecting the biggest lead of the contest, 109-79.

“This is a memorable game for us because we now have a win streak,” said Coach Herrera.  “This further improves our chances for the semis and the important thing this is that we control our fate.”

Martinez canned five triples en route to 32 points, two short of the tournament record set by Blustar’s Juami Tiongson last June 16 in a 94-97 loss to Phoenix Petroleum.  McCarthy did not score in the fourth period but he still knocked in 24 points on top of seven rebounds and five assists.

Also contributing big numbers were Arambulo with 16 points.  Jay-R Taganas got the better of the taller Blustar frontline by amassing 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Ting Chung Hong matched Martinez with five triples to lead the Dragons with21 points.  Tiongson followed with 15 points while Kuek Tian Yuen had a double-double of 14 points and 20 rebounds.

The Dragons succumbed to their fifth straight setback for a 1-9 record.  However, the slump could end when they face winless Topstar ZC Mindanao for their penultimate game on Tuesday (July 26) at Ynares, the only team they defeated last June 23 in Bacoor City, 89-75.
