NCAA: San Beda d. Perpetual Help, 88-70

NCAA Season 92     SAN JUAN City – San Beda College is now alone at the top of the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) standings and they love it.  The Red Lions disposed of the University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta, 88-70, last Tuesday (July 19) at the San Juan Arena for their fifth consecutive victory of the young season.

It was Donald Tankoua’s time to shine as the hardworking center got the better of the Altas’ Nigerian tag team of Bright Akhuetie and Prince Eze.  Tankoua, who hails from Nigeria’s next door neighbor Cameroon, struck heaviest in the second period as he unloaded nine markers to power San Beda’s breakaway, 45-35.

Coach Jamike Jarin was all praises for his big man.  Tankoua finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds while AC Soberano and Robert Bolick hit key baskets in the final period to stave off the Altas’ attempts to close in.

Gab Dagangon paced the Altas with 14 points followed by Gerald Dizon and Akhuetie with 13 points each.  In contrast, Tankoua had better individual numbers than Akhuetie and Eze who totalled 15 points and 10 rebounds together.

San Beda’s ascent to the solo leadership was aided by Arellano University’s blasting of erstwhile undefeated co-leader Mapua Institute of Technology in the earlier contest, 96-75.  Guard Kent Salado led the way for the Chiefs with 20 points and nine rebounds.

In the day’s curtain raiser, defending champion Letran drew fantasy numbers from guard Rey Nambatac to frustrate San Sebastian College, 90-77.  Nambatac hit five triples for 40 points on top of 10 rebounds and two assists as the Knights notched their fourth win in a row after dropping their opening day assignment against San Beda.
