NCAA: Arellano d. San Sebastian, 99-81

NCAA Season 92     SAN JUAN City – Arellano University’s prodigious backcourt tandem of Jiovani Jalalon and Kent Salado wreaked havoc on both offense and defense as the Chiefs plastered San Sebastian College, 99-81, in a clash of erstwhile undefeated sides at the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games at the San Juan Arena Friday (July 1).  The Chiefs joined the idle Mapua Tech Cardinals and season host San Beda College at the early leadership with 2-0 win-loss records.

Jalalon and Salado combined for 19 points in the third period as Arellano began to pull away entering the final period, 71-57.  The Stags countered with back-to-back triples from Jerrick Fabian and Arkie Ilagan to come to their closest, 67-73, but it was quickly neutralized by a 12-4 run behind Dioncee Holts and the two backcourt aces, 85-71, and 4:50 to play.

By then, the outcome had been decided and the Chiefs still stretched their margin to as much as 20 points, 97-77.  “I still had to play Kent and Jiovani because we are still finding our chemistry,” said Coach Jerry Codinera.

Jalalon put up fantastic numbers of 31 points, 11 assists and eight steals.  Salado was next with 17 points and six assists while Holts had 10 points in the fourth period to total 16 points and five rebounds.

“We were having a lot of fun and very happy on the school bus ride going to the game today so I know something good will happen,” said Jalalon.  “Once the game started, I just focused at my task.”

Ryan Costelo led the Stags with 15 points and six rebounds.  Aljon Capobres followed with 14 points and six rebounds as they evened their slate at 1-1.
