D-League: Racal d. Phoenix, 93-78

2016 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Racal Tiles picked up a major scalp by toppling previously undefeated Phoenix Petroleum, 93-78, in continuing action from the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup Thursday (June 30). The Tile Masters thus ended the Accelerators winning run at five games and creating a wide open race for the top two spots in the seven-team tournament.

“That’s our target, to get into the top two,” said Coach Carlos Garcia. “For today, I told the players to expect a shorter rotation and some players will get to play longer than usual.”

Coach Garcia’s ploy worked as guard Jamil Ortuoste churned out his best performance of the tournament, scattering a quick 14 points in Racal’s first period blitz that saw them jump to a 29-22 advantage after 10 minutes.  Suddenly, the Tile Masters’ shooting went cold allowing Phoenix to race back into contention until Chris Javier gave Racal the slight lead just before halftime, 40-38.

Jonathan Grey engaged Mac Belo and Roger Pogoy in a third period shootout as the Tile Masters held serve entering the final period, 65-64.  By then, Phoenix simply lost steam as Ortuoste rediscovered his shooting touch and with help from shock trooper Billy Ray Robles stretched their margin to its highest, 92-76.
