D-League: Tanduay d. Blustar, 105-102 (OT)

2016 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Gelo Alolino took over leadership chores as Tanduay Rhum repeated over Blustar Detergent, 105-102, in overtime Tuesday night (June 28) at the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena.  Alolino hit seven points in the extra period and set up key baskets by his teammates for their fourth win in six games.

Juami Tiongson sank an off-balanced triple at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, 90-90.  Tiongson’s prayer completed the Dragons’ patient rally from 15 points down in the third period, 48-63.

In the overtime, Alolino completed a three-point play off a Tiongson foul to put the Rhum Masters ahead for good, 98-95, and 1:41 to go.  Despite going further ahead thanks to a timely basket by Jovet Mendoza and free throws from Louie Vigil with less than a minute remaining, 102-95, Tanduay still allowed the Dragons to inch closer but the Dragons failed to capitalize by missing their shots and committing turnovers.

“Let this game serve as a lesson to our newcomers and I hope this win will improve our team chemistry,” said Coach Lawrence Chongson.  “I’ll say it again, we were lucky that we played Blustar in their first game and look at them now, they are a very much improved team.”

Tanduay ambushed Blustar in the latter’s Foundation Cup debut, 94-71, last June 13.  The Dragons will now take a needed break and return to Malaysia with their next assignment set for July 14 against defending champion CafeFrance-CEU.

Alolino finished with 25 points on top of four rebounds and five assists.  Jaypee Belencion hit six triples en route to 20 points.

Ivan Yeo achieved a personal tournament record of 27 points to with 23 rebounds and three blocks but the effort went to naught as the Dragons fell to 1-6.  Tiongson, who did not play in the first game against the Rhum Masters, had a total of 18 points, five rebounds and six assists.
