D-League: Phoenix d. Topstar, 126-77

2016 Foundation Cup     PASIG CITY – Phoenix Petroleum unleashed another awesome display of firepower in repeating over the Topstar ZC Mindanao Aguilas, 126-77, for their fifth straight victory and solo leadership of the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena Monday (June 27).  The game was no different from their first meeting last June 9 which the Accelerators easily took, 108-78.

Not even an 11-day layoff plus the suspension of Mac Belo could deter the Accelerators’ merciless rampage.  A swarming and suffocating defense resulted in easy scores as they looked to settle the outcome early.

“We had a long break but I was greatly impressed by what the team showed in our first practice,” said Coach Eric Gonzales.  “I challenged them to play like the Phoenix team of old and they responded well to the challenge.”

A total of seven Phoenix players submitted double figures led by Mike Tolomia who accounted for 25 points and flirted with a triple-double by adding eight rebounds and nine assists.  Ed Daquioag followed with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Accelerators dominated the rebounds, 72-42, with Jam Jamito and Alfred Batino grabbing 14 and 11 respectively.  They likewise had more assists, 26-11, and shot a sizzling 50 of 95 from the field.

Roider Cabrera hit a triple to give the Aguilas their only taste of the lead, 15-12.  Phoenix responded by closing out the first period with an 11-2 run anchored on Daquioag and Batino to signal their breakaway, 23-17.

The Aguilas were never the same since and allowed the Accelerators to lead by as much as 53 markers, 124-71.  Phoenix did not relent, scoring 38 points in the final period despite the outcome already decided.

Gino Jumao-as was the lone bright spot for the Aguilas with 12 points.  The Aguilas dropped their fifth game in a row this tournament and eighth overall dating back to the 2016 Aspirants Cup.
