MIKE’S ROOM, the newest poker room in town held its grand opening last June 24 with a tournament offering PHP 2,000,000.00 to the champion. Owned by businessman Mike Kim with poker champion Vic de Guzman as general manager, the place is located at the second floor of the Midas Hotel and Casino along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City.

“We want the Philippines to have its own world-class poker room,” said Kim. “We hope to attract 700 to 1,000 players a day and be a catalyst to change people’s lives.”

Kim was referring to the possibility of earning anything from PHP 1,000,000.00 to as high as PHP 4,000,000.00 in a single tournament all for a buy in of PHP 2,000.00. The group vowed to conduct as many events as possible as long as it’s viable.

For his part, de Guzman was optimistic about the room’s potential. “This room aims to be the friendliest poker room because it is operated by players and our plans and decisions will be for the players,” he said.

Mike’s Room hopes to uplift the image of poker as a legitimate sport, with the establishment of a national sports association under the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC). Poker can also be a good magnet to attract tourists, with high rollers regularly arriving.

Passion is what drives Kim and his crew. “If I wanted to earn money, I would just play poker but I want to build the game so I am doing this,” added Kim, who has opened several other poker rooms in the Asian region and has plans of taking Mike’s Room to other key Philippine cities.

Aside from the game, players can also partake of the sumptuous meals and snacks while enjoying free flowing coffee, iced tea or fruit juice. Check out Mike’s Room for the total poker experience and don’t forget to follow them on social media via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
