D-League: Blustar d. Topstar, 89-75

2016 Foundation Cup    BACOOR CITY – Blustar Detergent finally barged into the win column with an inspiring 89-75 crushing of the Topstar ZC Mindanao Aguilas as the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup took its act for the very first time to the STRIKE Gymnasium Thursday (June 23).  Prior to the game, the Dragons lost all their four games by an average of 25.8 points, including a 62-point shaming at the hands of Phoenix Petroleum last Tuesday, 60-122.

“The players are slowly adjusting to the Filipino style of play,” said Coach Goh Cheng Huat.  “This will surely boost our confidence but we will take it one step at a time.”

Juami Tiongson continued his ascent as the tournament’s top scorer by coming off the bench to spew 24 points on the Aguilas on top of nine rebounds and four assists.  He did major damage in the second period by scoring nine points in a 24-3 closing run to peg the halftime count in Blustar’s favor, 48-33.

There was no stopping the Malaysian assault as Tiongson continued to hit his shots plus support from Wong Yi Hou and Kuek Tian Yuan resulted in their biggest lead, 84-58.  A late rally by the Aguilas trimmed the final margin but the outcome had long been moot and academic.

Wong backed up Tiongson with 19 points and seven rebounds.  Kuek had a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Gino Jumao-as was the high man for the Aguilas with 16 points and four rebounds.  Dexter followed with 11 points as the Aguilas remained at the bottom of the standings in company with AMA Online Education at 0-4.

No less than Bacoor City Mayor Strike Revilla was on hand to make the ceremonial toss and watch the game.  The game was part of the fourth anniversary celebration of Bacoor becoming a city.
