QUEZON CITY – Defending champion CafeFrance-CEU displayed fine form on both ends of the floor to subdue a much-improved Blustar Detergent, 98-83, at the resumption of the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach Gym Tuesday (June 14). Consisting of the core of the reigning ASEAN Basketball League champion Westports Malaysia Dragons, the visitors gave the Bakers a good challenge before folding.
“The Dragons have very agile big men who can score and are very strong,” observed Coach Edgar Macaraya. “It was our basketball talent that carried us but this team should be more dangerous after one or two more games as they adjust to the Filipino style of play.”
Just like in their first game against Tanduay Rhum a day earlier, the Dragons scored the first three points of the game before the Bakers took over and never looked back. Rodrigue Ebondo frolicked in the paint and Aaron Jeruta came off the bench as CafeFrance built a 25-16 cushion after one period.
Carl Bryan Cruz scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth period where the Bakers enjoyed their biggest lead, 85-60. Mar Villahermosa mad 14 of 15 points in a third period romp that broke the game wide open.
Kuek Tian Yuan led the Dragons with 19 points. Ma Chee Khuen was next with 15 points.
