SAN JUAN City – Tournament surprise Adamson University planted one foot in the semifinals of the 2016 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup by frustrating no less than defending champion De La Salle-Zobel, 65-59, at the resumption of play Saturday morning (May 21) at the San Juan Arena. The Baby Falcons rose to 3-0 and solo leadership of Group B while the Junior Archers evened up their record to 1-1.
Adamson under Coach Goldwin Monteverde got off to a good start behind forward Raymund Sumayao and guards Jason Celis and Jojo Antiporda and won the first period, 19-10. From there, they maintained their double-digit lead until DLSZ staged a spirited rally in the fourth period.
Astro Vista, Pete Rabor and Jan Sobrevega began to rain a barrage of triples that enabled the Junior Archers to come to their closest, 59-62. However, time was not on their side as Celis and Antiporda capped their game-long brilliance with pressure-packed free throws to seal the victory.
Celis led the Baby Falcons with 15 points and three steals in 31 minutes of play. Antiporda was joined by Evan Agbong and Gerry Abadiano in chipping in nine markers each.
Vista paced DLSZ for the second straight game with 16 points. Sobrevega followed with nine points and four rebounds.
