SAN JUAN City – Arellano University scored an amazing 80-78 come from behind win over San Sebastian College in continuing action from the 2016 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena. Donald Gumaru scored 11 straight points to key the win that saw the Chiefs fall behind by 17 points at the halftime break, 35-52.
Gumaru first swapped baskets with AJ Capobres as the Stags held a 75-70 advantage with 2:40 to go in the final period. That was the cue for Gumaru to unload back-to-back triples to give the Chiefs the lead for the first time since the opening period, 76-75.
He then fouled Arkie Ilagan attempting a triple and the Stags guard made two of his three free throws to restore the lead to San Sebastian at the 1:33 mark, 77-76. Gumaru then atoned for his miscue by knocking in his third and final triple to give Arellano the lead for good with 1:07 remaining, 79-77.
Alfren Gayosa drew a foul and split his charities to threaten at the 36-second mark, 78-79. San Sebastian managed to put up a defensive stop, with the ball going to Jerrick Fabian who attempted to win the game with a strong drive to the hoop only to be denied by the Arellano defense.
Dioncee Holts settled the final tally with a free throw split off a Michael Calisaan in the ensuing loose ball scramble just before the buzzer rang. Arellano improved to 4-1 while San Sebastian fell to 2-3 in Group A.
“I don’t like situations like this where we play catch up,” said Coach Jerry Codinera, who had to make up for the absence of team leader Jiovani Jalalon who joined the national team for the SEABA Cup in Thailand. “Even without Jiovani, as long as the players play their assigned roles, we will be fine.”
Kent Salado led Arellano with 18 points and nine assists. Gumaru finished with 16 points.
Calisaan paced San Sebastian with 19 points but could only come up with four points in the second half. Fabian and Ryan Costelo followed with eight points each.
