FilOil: DLS-Zobel d. Lyceum-Cavite, 83-70

10th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup      SAN JUAN City – Defending Juniors Division champion De La Salle-Zobel opened its title retention bid in the 2016 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup via an 83-70 bashing of Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite Thursday (May 19) at the San Juan Arena. For now, the post-Aljun Melecio era looks promising for the Junior Archers as a complete team effort keyed the win.

DLSZ was well in control of the game from the opening tip despite a slight hiccup in the third canto that allowed the Junior Pirates to cut the gap entering the final period, 59-63, anchored on two triples from Jun Cecilio and baskets by Mclaude Guadana.  Timely baskets in the fourth by Joaquin Mariano, Astro Vista and Jan Sobrevega preserved the win.

“It’s not like before when we had Aljun because he can create for himself,” said Coach Boris Aldeguer.  “It’s still a long way to go so we will rely a lot on our teamwork since we have a lot of new players while the other schools remained intact.”

To underscore their teamwork, DLSZ had 21 assists compared to the 11 of Lyceum.  The much smaller Junior Achers stayed close in the rebound battle with Lyceum only five boards better, 48-43.

Vista led the Junior Archers with 18 points.  Mariano and Sobrevega added 16 points each with Mariano plucking eight rebounds.

Vincent Cunanan topped the Junior Pirates with 12 points as they dropped their second game in a row for a 1-2 record in Group B.  Makki Santos and Chester Jungco provided support with 10 points each.

Coach Aldeguer is expecting a bigger challenge when they play fellow UAAP contender Adamson University for their next assignment.  The said game will be this Saturday (May 21) starting at 9:00 AM.
