FilOil: Two Wins For National

10th FilOil Flying V Premier Cup    SAN JUAN City – National University surged to its second straight victory via a sound 75-59 punishing of defending UAAP champion Far Eastern University at the 2016 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Saturday (May 14) at the San Juan Arena.  While the Bulldogs are celebrating, the Tamaraws are now on a three-game losing skid after winning their opening game.

Again, Coach Eric Altamirano drew impressive performances from his rookies and transferees with guard JV Gallego popping in seven points in the first period to power the Bulldogs to a 23-11 edge.  They then stretched their lead further by halftime, 41-22.

“We look to be an up-tempo team,” said Coach Altamirano.  “I like the response of the players to situations and I guess we must be doing something good.”

It was the turn of Chino Mosqueda to shine in the second half as he added eight more points in the third period.  As National already had the outcome long settled and with Coach Altamirano giving the role players time on the floor, the Tamaraws tried to lessen the deficit behind the late scores of Richard Escoto and Steve Holmqvist but to no avail.

Gallego topped the Bulldogs with 15 points.  Mosqueda finished with 13 points and three assists.

In the day’s nightcap, reigning UAAP champion Nazareth School made it a double as they tripped La Salle Green Hills, 87-73.  The Bullpups kept their undefeated slate at 2-0 while the Greenies fell to 1-1 in a tie with the Malayan High School of Science in Group A of the Juniors Division.
